Dread is Tor’s equivalent to Reddit.

Dread was created in 2018 when Reddit banned 200k+ users on an Infinity War sub — the largest mass ban in its history to overcome censorship and strict moderation.

However, the anonymity of its users and lack of moderation makes it difficult to regulate. For example, trolling, the spread of misinformation, and offensive comments are common on Dread, while they’re usually quickly removed from similar forums on the surface web. You’ll also find many areas covering topics that are potentially illegal.

Why would one of the largest organizations known for its invasiveness and controversial clear-name policy have a .onion address?

Facebook is aware of attempts by many governments to restrict access to a tool that allows strangers across the web to talk and collaborate freely. While its .onion address doesn’t make it much easier to maintain an anonymous account, it does make Facebook more accessible in places where it’s censored.

Prior to the release of an official .onion domain, accessing Facebook through Tor would sometimes lead to error messages and inability to access the website. ProPublica explicitly referenced the existence of Facebook’s .onion site when they started their own onion service.

The site also makes it easier for Facebook to differentiate between accounts that have been caught up in a botnet and those that legitimately access Facebook through Tor. As of its 2014 release, the site was still in early stages, with much work remaining to polish the code for Tor access. It has been speculated that other companies will follow suit and release their own Tor-accessible sites.

Daniel Winzen creates this onion site. It’s his personal onion site that he develops in his free time. He started developing this site in August or September 2013 when he wanted to have a platform to host files on to use at school.

Quickly the idea of using a chat at school came up, and he came across a simple Perl chat script called LE-CHAT. When he deployed that on his Raspberry Pi, it was running very slowly and wasn’t really usable for use with several people. So he decided to port some parts he needed to PHP.

This has been the start for him to get deeper into web development, and he has since open-sourced that chat script and several other scripts of this site on his GitHub account. Since then, He has added many new features and improved reliability and his code a lot.

You can use his site to upload/download files, check whether an onion service is online, shorten URLs, chat with others, get an anonymous email address and XMPP account, host your own website on Tor or simply browse through his huge list of a known onion website.

Daniel is an excellent resource to help you explore different dark web links and the Tor browser in general. Daniel’s website lists 7000 onion links which are categorized to make browsing easier. Moreover, it has a very useful built-in functionality which lets you know whether a particular website is online. This is very useful, as it means you don’t need to click and load every dark web link listed to see if it’s working. Especially with the potentially long loading times of the Tor browser, this is a great feature.
